Bobble - Karim Rashid

Me pregunto si alguien también había imaginado este producto antes, pero creo que el "Bobble" de Karim Rashid es lo que los doctores nos recetaban. A uno que odia tomar agua de la llave (sobre todo por el sabor, y por que no es muy limpia ademas de todo), esta parece ser una muy buena alternativa.

Esencialmente trabajando como un termo, el "Bobble" es funcional, bonito, y portable. Una forma muy buena de animar a la gente a tomar agua de la llave.

Bienvenidos de nuevo al semestre, esperemos este sea el año que todos queremos.

Empezemos el semestre con algo muy sencillo, pero bueno...

Los cuartos para niños, Neoset, del diseñador Karim Rashid. La coleccion contiene literas y camas individuales, libreros, cuadros, buros e imagenes visuales.

The LEGO World of Nathan Sawaya

Nathan Sawaya, a 36-year-old former lawyer has stunned the world with his incredible LEGO artworks.

If giving up a successful career in law that paid a six figure salary, to follow a childhood dream doesn’t spell passion, then I don’t know what does. That’s exactly what Nathan Sawaya did, but he managed to build himself another career brick by brick and now he sells his LEGO masterpieces for thousands of dollars.

Right now, Nathan has an inventory of 1.5 million LEGO bricks to use on his sculptures, at his New York studio and says his largest artwork was made up of about half-a-million bricks. His LEGO works are now as valuable as they are beautiful, selling for more than $10,000 each.

After posting his early work on the internet, Nathan Sawaya started getting orders for his art and realized the huge potential of his work. Now he has even created a piece for Donald Trump. he believes there is nothing he can’t create out of LEGO.

La silla numero 14

No cabe duda de que el diseño es muy importante para la construcción de una sociedad sostenible y pocos ejemplos mejores que la Silla Thonet.

Nacido en Boppard el 2 de julio de 1796, Michael Thonet es el creador de la técnica de curvado al vapor de la madera, consiguiendo formas que a golpe de cincel costaban un gran esfuerzo. En 1841 obtuvo la primera patente para doblado en caliente de la madera, que así preparada podía ser ensamblarse fácilmente con unos pocos tornillos.

De su empresa Gebrüder Thonet, cerca de Viena, salió en 1850 la Silla Número 1, primera de una serie que abrirían el mercado internacional cosechando decenas de premios en todas las ferias del mundo.

Silla Número 14
La Silla Número 14, Kaffeehausstuhl Nr. 14, o silla de café, data de 1859. Al año siguiente crearía la mecedora, su obra maestra, la madre de todas las mecedoras…

La Silla Número 14 fué la respuesta a la demanda de sillas estilos café -también es conocida como Silla Bistro-. Está hecha con 6 piezas de madera sometidas a la técnica del curvado al vapor, 10 tornillos y dos tuercas, con los asientos de rafia, porque de esta forma si caía algún líquido éste no quedaba retenido, y, sobre todo, gran facilidad de ensamblaje.

Tuvo tan gran éxito, que entre 1860 y 1930 se vendieron más de 15 millones y se calcula que desde entonces se han vendido no menos de 50 millones más.

Alice Rawsthorn dice:

“Cuando fue lanzada en 1859 fue la primera pieza de mobiliario lo bastante
atractiva y barata como para atraer desde los aristócratas hasta los maestros de
colegio… Brahms utilizaba una para tocar el piano, y Lenin se sentaba en otra
para redactar sus tratados, y así millones de personas en todos los cafés del
mundo. Le Corbusier fue un admirador: “Nunca hubo un diseño mejor y más
elegante, preciso y práctico”.

Partes y empaquetado
Gracias a la técnica conseguía piezas de curvas suaves pero resistentes, y haciéndola a partir del menor número posible de piezas, estandarizando su forma, permitía que trabajadores no especializados las empaquetaran y enviaran a sus destinos, donde eran muy fácilmente ensambladas, dando lugar así a un eficiente plan de producción en masa, pionero en sostenibilidad. Los primeros modelos se hicieron en la factoría de Koritschan, hoy República Checa, con madera de haya de los bosques cercanos, y cuando la demanda aumentó y se hicieron necesarias importaciones de lugares más alejados, Thonet construyó sus propias herramientas y maquinaria.

5 Ways to Sound Smarter in a Crit

What comes out of your mouth is sometimes as important as what you tack up on the wall, so when presenting design work in class, you wanna make sure your patter raises your game.

Try these 5 phrases to start you off when you're in a crit. They'll make you sound smart, and if you can pull them off, they just may just help you think bigger about your ideas. But be careful not to go too far; there's a pretty clear line between balls and bullshit.


Phrase #1
Just enough: "This design is all about scale..." (You can't ever go wrong with that one.)

Too much: "This design is all about scale, from the micro to the macro, from the human condition to the expansion of the cosmos. Design is about infinite possibility, and at this stage in my education, I consider myself limitless in creativity and ambition..."


Phrase #2
Just enough: "What I'm showing here blurs the line a bit between form and content..."

Too much: "What I'm showing here blurs the line a bit between form and content, teasing out the possibilities between what is and what might be. I think we can all agree that a true articulation of a design requires both the storytelling and, well, the actual book itself...so let me read you my book..."


Phrase #3
Just enough: "I tried to break the problem down into its most elemental parts..."

Too much: "I tried to break the problem down into its most elemental parts, and that the further I went, the more it became clear to me that at the end of the continuum—'cause that's what it turned out to be, actually—at the end of the continuum, what we're really talking about right there is 'the user.' So I started with the user..."


Phrase #4
Just enough: "The thing that I had the hardest time with was trying to make this assignment personal..."

Too much: "The thing that I had the hardest time with was trying to make this assignment personal. Without sounding narcissistic or self-absorbed...wait, are those the same thing?...well, without sounding like that, I really wanted to design something that made ME happy; something that I'D want to buy. And I have to say straight-out: I'd want to buy THIS..."


Phrase #5
Just enough: "Well, let me go on record that I have conflicted feelings about this work, but that at base, I really feel that these are studies. And as studies, they are more discursive than demonstrative..."

Too much: Actually, that last one IS to much, but it's a great test. If they don't cry B.S. after #5 comes out of your mouth, you're pretty much ready to graduate. Congrats!
